Charges, funding and advertising

Manuscript submission, assessment, peer review, editorial preparation and publication are free for authors. There are no charges for length, illustrations, identifiers or expedited assessment. The journal does not sell acceptance decisions or offer paid acceleration of peer review.

Sources of journal funding are disclosed on the About the Journal page. Funders, the founder and the publisher do not replace the editors’ independent scholarly decisions. Funding of individual studies is disclosed in each article.

The journal does not place advertising within scholarly articles or accept undisclosed promotional material presented as research. Journal announcements are accurate, clearly identified by purpose and separated from scholarly publications. The editors do not use unsolicited bulk promotional mailings.

Reader access is described separately on the Access terms page. The absence of author charges does not determine the reader access model. Any change in the financial model is published in advance and communicated before authors incur obligations; charges are not introduced retrospectively.
