Abstract

Environmental issues and sustainable development are becoming increasingly relevant in the modern world. In this context, educational institutions play an important role in fostering environmentally responsible behavior among students and staff. Introducing a green agenda in Russian universities is an important step in the development of sustainable education and a conscious attitude towards the environment. Methods of document analysis, surveys among students and teachers, as well as interviews with university management were used to study trends. The object of the study was leading Russian universities that have implemented environmental initiatives in their daily activities. Programs to reduce energy consumption, waste management, use of renewable energy sources, and promotion of environmental awareness were considered. The study showed that many Russian universities are actively involved in the implementation of the green agenda. In some universities, special departments for sustainable development have been created, environmental events and actions are held, and energy-efficient technologies are being introduced. Surveys showed that students and teachers generally have a positive attitude towards environmental initiatives and are ready to support them. The main challenges faced by universities include lack of funding, absence of a clear strategy and coordination of actions, as well as a low level of environmental awareness among some groups of students and teachers. Nevertheless, many universities demonstrate successful examples of integrating the green agenda into the educational process and administrative practice. The importance of international cooperation and exchange of experience is also noted as one of the ways to increase the effectiveness of the implementation of environmental technologies and practices. The implementation of the green agenda in Russian universities is at an active stage of development and has significant potential. An important task remains to increase awareness and involve all participants in the educational process in environmental initiatives, which ultimately will contribute to the formation of a sustainable and environmentally responsible society.
