Abstract

This paper examines the use of virtual reality (VR) technology in news reporting, with a focus on the development of immersive journalism. As the media landscape evolves, VR offers new opportunities for audience engagement. The article assesses VR's potential to enhance news consumption and examines the challenges journalists face in implementing this technology. Virtual reality (VR) technology has introduced groundbreaking possibilities in journalism by creating immersive experiences that enhance audience engagement. This article examines the evolving role of VR in news reporting, particularly in immersive journalism, which allows audiences to engage more deeply with content. As media organizations explore VR’s potential, it is crucial to assess both its benefits and challenges, especially in terms of cost, production, and ethical considerations. This study employs an interdisciplinary approach, combining qualitative content analysis and quantitative assessments. Content analysis of VR-based news reports is supported by interviews with journalists and media producers. Audience engagement data and viewer reactions to VR news reports are also compared to those of traditional formats. VR-enhanced news reports significantly increase emotional impact and audience engagement, fostering deeper empathy for the subject matter. However, challenges include high production costs, ethical concerns about viewer manipulation, and maintaining objectivity in immersive environments. VR’s potential in journalism is immense, but its development requires advancements in both technology and ethical guidelines. Journalists need to address issues like audience manipulation and the balance between emotional engagement and factual reporting. Virtual reality holds great promise for the future of journalism, provided its technological and ethical challenges are navigated with care.
