Verbal means of expressing politeness in English

Abstract

Politeness is a fundamental component of communication and plays a key role in establishing and maintaining social relationships. In English, the set of verbal means of expressing politeness is extremely diverse, which necessitates their study. The main purpose of this work is to study the structure and functioning of verbal means of expressing politeness in English, taking into account cultural, social and communicative factors. The research is based on the analysis of written and oral texts in English, as well as on the study of scientific literature on the linguistics of politeness. The methods of contextual analysis, comparative analysis and classification were used in the work. The data for the study included recordings of dialogues, excerpts from works of fiction, as well as interviews and public appearances. The study showed that verbal means of politeness in English include a wide range of strategies, such as the use of modal verbs (e.g., "could", "would"), conditional constructions, polite expressions (e.g., "please", "thank you", "excuse me") and addresses. Factors such as the level of formality, the social status of the interlocutors, and the communication situation have a significant impact on the choice of verbal means. It is also revealed that politeness is often based on the principles of indirect communication and involves the use of euphemisms. The results obtained demonstrate the richness and variety of means of expressing politeness in English. The introduction of definitions of key politeness strategies helps to better understand the features of English-language communication and the cultural norms inherent in it. The practical significance of the work lies in the possibility of its application in teaching English to native speakers of other languages. The verbal implementation of politeness in English is determined by a combination of linguistic and cultural factors. The analysis of the proposed strategies contributes to an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of interlanguage communication.
