The history of the evolution of the Chinese currency

Abstract

The history of the evolution of the Chinese currency is a centuries-old process related to the economic development of the country, political reforms and the influence of external factors. Understanding this evolution allows for a deeper analysis of the mechanisms of adaptation and sustainability of the national economy. The article examines the development of the Chinese monetary system during various historical stages, starting from ancient times and ending with modern realities. The study is based on an analysis of historical sources, including government documents, chronicles, and research on the Chinese economy. The methods of historiographical analysis, comparative characteristics and data synthesis were applied, which made it possible to structure the material in accordance with the key stages of the evolution of the monetary system. The paper highlights several key stages in the history of the development of the Chinese currency. The first stage is the introduction of the first metal coins in the era of the ancient dynasties. The second stage covers the period of the Tang and Song dynasties, when paper banknotes appeared, which became a revolutionary achievement for the global economy. The third stage covers the 20th century, including the transition to the yuan, mid-century reforms and modernization of the system, which made China's currency a prominent participant in the global financial system. Finally, in the 21st century, the Chinese currency has strengthened its position through integration into the global economy and the introduction of the digital yuan. The evolution of the Chinese monetary system reflects the complex historical, economic, and political changes that have taken place in the country. The modern yuan, as a result of centuries of development, plays an important role in the global economy, as evidenced by its growing use in international settlements and the successful introduction of digital technologies. This study highlights the importance of studying monetary history for understanding China's economic dynamics.
