Motivational strategies for increasing students' interest in learning foreign languages in the higher education system

Abstract

In the age of globalization and integration, knowledge of foreign languages is becoming an integral part of professional competence. However, many students in the higher education system face a low level of motivation, which negatively affects their learning outcomes. The present study is aimed at identifying the most effective motivational strategies that increase students' interest in learning foreign languages. The study used methods of quantitative and qualitative analysis. A survey of students from various universities and an analysis of educational programs were conducted. Methods of pedagogical experiment were also used, which included the introduction of various motivational strategies into the educational process. Statistical methods were used to process the data. The study showed that the integration of modern technologies, the use of project-based learning, as well as the individualization of the educational process have a positive impact on student motivation. The inclusion of gamification elements has been recognized as one of the most effective strategies, which helps to increase engagement in the learning process. Students demonstrated a significant increase in the level of interest in classes when using practice-oriented tasks, such as business games and imitation of real situations. The importance of emotional support from the teacher and the creation of an atmosphere of goodwill in the classroom was also emphasized. The results confirmed the theoretical assumptions about the effectiveness of the above strategies. However, certain barriers were also identified, such as insufficient technical equipment and resistance to change on the part of some participants in the educational process. The use of motivational strategies in teaching a foreign language is key to increasing student engagement. The results of the study can be implemented into university curricula in order to improve the quality of education and train highly qualified specialists who speak foreign languages.
