Conceptualization of magnitude in English and Russian phraseological worldviews

Abstract

Russian Russian and English linguistic systems The article "Conceptualization of magnitude in the English and Russian phraseological worldviews" examines the processes of conceptualization of magnitude in two cultural and linguistic systems - English and Russian. The research is based on phraseological expressions, which are an important element of reflecting the worldview of native speakers and carry information about the specifics of perception of the world. The introduction emphasizes that quantity as a concept has a universal character, occupying a significant place in the human cognitive system. The author substantiates the relevance of studying this concept through the prism of phraseology, since these units of language capture the cultural, mental and national-specific characteristics of native speakers of this language. The main purpose of the article is to identify similarities and differences in the conceptualization of magnitude in the English and Russian phraseological worldviews. Cognitive and comparative approaches are used as the basis of the research. Phraseological units for analysis are selected from reputable dictionaries of English and Russian languages. The analysis takes into account the semantics, metaphorization, and cultural contexts associated with a numerical or qualitative quantity. The analysis reveals that the conceptualization of magnitude in English and Russian phraseology has both universal and culturally specific aspects. Universality manifests itself in similar metaphors, for example, through physical and spatial characteristics. Culturally specific differences are related to the mental characteristics of perception, history, traditions, and way of thinking of each culture. In conclusion, it is emphasized that Russian phraseology more often reflects magnitude through hyperbolization and emotional coloring, while English phraseology reflects through objectivity and standards. The work contributes to the development of cognitive linguistics, intercultural communication and phraseology, and can also become the basis for further research in this field.
